Nara Native Zoysia project
In 2013 the Zinc mine at Camooweal, North West of Mt Isa, purchased around 10,000 square metres of Nara Native Zoysia. The turf was to be placed around their ‘fly in fly out’ camp and was watered by their treated sewerage water. The mine ordered another 2000 square metres in 2014 which we delivered on our own trucks in one delivery. Although being over 2000 kilometres away we were able to deliver next day and the turf arrived cool and in great condition. What was so amazing was how good the turf from the last year looked, as you can see from the photos. Nothing else will grow there, even Spinifex yet the Nara is thriving. The soil is very poor, the Summer heat is extreme and the Winter overnight temperatures are freezing yet this grass thrives all year round. Even in those conditions it is very low maintenance, only requiring an occasional mowing.
One of the workers from the mine has purchased Nara for his new house on the Sunshine Coast, saying “if Nara will grow there in Camooweal, it will grow anywhere”.
Nara Native Zoysia will grow from the beach to the desert. It has 50% shade tolerance, the highest salt tolerance level of any turf and will grow on almost any soil. Nara needs minimal water and the grubs don’t like it but most importantly it looks beautiful. I would choose it over the Buffalo or Couch any day.
